Talking Build: Sound Quality In-Cabin Dual 10” Woofer Enclosure (Lots of PICS!)

Greetings Yaris Owners,

This build has the usual goals:

Sound Quality: Tight, accurate bass that would sound good regardless of whether it's hip hop, EDM, vocals or orchestra music, and anything else

No rattles

Bass energy focussed on the two front passengers

Kick in the back

Easy to move around

System flexibility/No compromise with regards to space

Stealth to avoid attracting unwanted attention

Hopefully sharing this build with the Yarisworld may spark some ideas for others for their own builds.

Positive constructive comments are welcome

Calculations and planning:

mr_miles,

That's the dented rotor from my first blown engine.

Yeah, I miss it too.

aaand... the 17.4 lbs. of boost on a new engine with new Efini turbos

Built a stealth system in the RX-7, too

We're back on topic in the next post

Designing rubber seals to prevent air leaks around the woofer baskets:

10" woofer with seals:

Woofer next to iPhone 4S, and no, I just don't feel like upgrading yet

10" woofer with seal/gasket in place:

I am so loving this so far. I have an 8" sub in a prefab box which was made for 2 subs that takes up my whole boot. I'm also in the process of making a stealth setup that's gonna look OEM. May even upgrade the 8" kicker for a 10" while I'm busy to get the best of both worlds :P \m/

A little Focal might sound better.

Hot stuff! I reckon I wanna see your build complete though for some inspiration as I am a total novice when it comes to woodwork etc.

1nz revolution,

I agree. That's why I bought a a set of open-boxed Focal 3-way components for the 2003 MR-S.

For subs, however, I've really been impressed with SoundQubed for their ultra-rigid lightweight cone, serious suspension, spring-loaded terminals, insane voice coil and completely exceptional quality.

This HDS208 dual 2-ohm 8" woofer is rated at 600 RMS, but it easily handles closer to 1000 off a Pioneer D-class without bottoming out.

Typical box-building materials. Maybe should have posted this earlier

Ported enclosure mockup (for the 8" sub for the MR-S). Flush-mounted woofer, dual ports (for aesthetic symmetry) and rounded panels for improved efficiency, port aerodynamics and reduced port noise:

Ported enclosure construction. Notice the rounded port channels, pilot-drilled screw holes and straight-through 12-gauge OFC wires for the dual voice coils.

My dremel broke, and I didn't want to spend $40 to buy a new one so all rounded panels were actually done by hand.

Open-box purchase for $360 on the Focal 3-ways

Removed the cheap soft rubber dust caps from the Focal 6-3/4 woofers to be replaced with homemade polypropylene caps:

MedMantle,

Thanks! It just comes from creativity, experience and doing it right the first time, even if it means your project might take a little longer.
