Just how much better is the Skyactiv engine compared to the old one?

I wanted to ask how much better the Skyactiv really is. It replaced another 1.5L, but I forgot the name of the old one. I have a 2009 Yaris so I've got the older one. I remember reading that the old one was used for a very long time and was considered to be very reliable. Anyone know why they made the switch?

Perhaps the Skyactiv gets better fuel economy?

The switch was made because the new Yaris is nothing but a Mazda with Toyota badges on it.

I think that engine has direct injection only. It’s possible to carbon up the cylinder head with those. Most engines have manifold injection combined with direct injection or just manifold Injection to avoid that

2016-2021 North American yaris are Mazda 2 the rest of the world got Toyota made vitz rebadged as Yaris in same year range.

The 2022 on Yaris are made by toyota not mazda and Mazda is the one rebadging this time as Mazda2.

I know all that. I'm talking to a North American OP.
Also, in our market, 2019 was the first Mazda replacement model year. Not 2016.

Yeah just the sedan was mazda 2 from 2016, the 2019 the hatches were. No idea how the engines tho if they are any better but the mazda 2 are the most reliable of all the new mazda so that says something I guess.

I keep forgetting that the sedan (Scion iA) preceded the hatch in becoming a rebadged Mazda. The Skyactive drivetrain has serviced Mazda well.
Back to OPs original question about why Toyota decided to switch engines. They didn't switch the engine, they switched manufacturers. Throw some redesigned plastic on the Mazda 2 and call it a Toyota.

Canada also never got the MazdaYaris hatch, its launch was canceled here and we got the gen 3 Yaris for an extra model year.

What would be the point? If Toyota is still making the Yaris elsewhere, why bother quitting in north america? Now you have two different cars under the same name. Even if they're on different continents.

IIRC the vitz and the yaris are the same car with different badges. Or very close to it.
