Exclamation Steering paranoia!

The steering on my Yaris feels extemely loose and unpredictable in the responsiveness when about 20-30 mph.
It's ok below that speed infact it feels tighter and ok at speed above 40 mph ++ where it stiffens up nicely.

Is this normal or is there something wrong with my Yaris??

Ps: the ride is also very bumpy going over small defects in road not sure if this is the norm as I've read it was suppose to be a soft ride.

I have made no performance modications to the car.

well our yaris have electronic steering so the steering wheel isn't exactly steering the wheels directly but a computer or whatnot is. When I first got in there, the steering was also feeling like whoa... so responsive! But if it doesn't feel right to you then get it checked out.

As for the bumps in the road.. it could be that you need a tire rotation. I remember my sentra was really bumpy at one time because the wheels weren't aligned correctly. so check it out.

hmmm, i never had an issue with the steering other than having to get used to it being electronically controlled. and for the harsh ride...when mine was stock, it was super soft. so maybe bring it up with the dealership?

Just a suggestion that won't cost you - check if any (or all) of your tires have been exceedingly over/under inflated. Inadequately inflated tires can cause the steering to become weird and make the ride uncomfortable. For best balance among handling, comfort, durability and fuel economy, I would pump my tires to the manual suggested level of pressure.
