Stiff gears after a while

Hello all,

New to the forums and apologies if this has been asked (couldn't find a topic through search).

At the start of the day, my car is fine to drive but the longer it's driven the more difficult it gets to change gears - especially into 2nd and 3rd. Everything else seems fine.

I've found that if it's revved higher than normal (3-4000rpm) for local driving that the gears get progressively worse quicker.

Hope someone can help as I can imagine the Toyota dealers not sorting something like this out cheaply!!!

Thanks in advance...

sounds like a heat issue almost... fluid old... or maybe a leak has led to a lack of fluid.

Had the car for just over 2 years, bought It on 57k, it's now done just over 64k.

The general consensus seems to be that it's the transmission fluid - I'll get this checked/changed/refilled as appropriate.

Probably a completely silly question, but is this a big/expensive job?

Thanks again

it can be easily done by yourself if you have a garage.
if you decide to do it at shops, it should cost you around 40~50 i think..

i got my manual tranny fluid done when it had 40k kms, (pretty early flush if you'd tell me) but holy shit, the shifting got so much noticibly better.

Thanks for the info.

Forgot to mention this earlier, but I had a new clutch fitted about 18 months ago. Would this have any bearing on the problem as in transmission fluid is usually changed at the same time (I think)?

Yes, the gear oil is usually changed when a clutch is replaced. I there any type of warranty on the clutch work? Maybe you can bring the car back to the same ppl?

They may have just put in a cruddy gear oil. I would check for leaks.

I put Redline in my TJ and it really made a difference, especially in the winter. It's not too hard to do and relatively inexpensive, on the Jeep the cross member/skid plate got in the way, but I imagine it's much easier on the Yaris.
