I think the common American term is "Hatchback", Toyota markets the car as a "Liftback".
Not that it really matters either way, but when I hear "Liftback" I think of cars like the Yaris, Civic or Mazda 2 with a near verticle rear door that goes to the floor. When I hear "Hatchback", I think of cars like Saab with a lifting rear cover but there is still a rear wall that you have to lift thing over.

My Estonian registration actually says "MPV"

To Stove: I see it vice-versa and I've got this Wikipedia quote to back it up

Quote:
A liftback is a broad marketing term for a hatchback where the profile aspect of the rear cargo door is more horizontal than vertical, with a sharply raked or fastback profile.

The quote is from a RMIT University, Melbourne Australia article and we all know everything is backwards south of the equator.

toyota only marketed the yaris as a "liftback" in the United States to change up the perception of what the car is. in Canada they call it a hatchback

I call mine both actually sometimes liftback sometimes hatchback. But I think it's called a liftback b/c the whole back literally lifts up! meaning everything but the quarter panels and bumper lifts up. I think it really don't matter.

It doesn't, there is no difference between a hatchback (the more common term in the US) and a liftback (the term Toyota likes to use "to be different"). They are one in the same, and most (myself) use the terms interchangeably...

Personally, I prefer "hatchback" as it does provide access to the area I refer to as the "hatch." I think the opposite of Stove, to me a hatchback means when the entire back of the car opens up (like on the Yaris), and a liftback is more like the Saab. But it's a free country, and everyone is entitled to think the way they want...

Cheers! M2
