radio hooked up to stay on while starting?
Hey guys,
My radio has a boot sequence that is pretty slow and I use my phone to play music so after the boot sequence it then has to connect to that to play music. I was wondering if there was a different ignition switched power wire I could connect to so that it stays on while I start the car. |

The easiest way to do it is to bypass the ACC Cut Relay (which is mounted to the left side of the under dash fuse panel).
You can do by jumping one of the white wires in pin 3 to the blue wire in pin 4. That will prevent the ECM from dropping power to ACC fed devices while the starter is cranking. ACC Cut Relay Socket.jpg

Is that circuit not there to prevent accessories from massive voltage fluctuation from the draw of the starter?

It is there to help the car out with not having a draw from unnecessary devices while cranking. If the battery is good the voltage should not sag below 11V while cranking.

At -15°C or even colder, I can guaranty voltage will drop below 11V. I know my battery is not in it's prime anymore as it came used from an '03 Vitz RS that was in the shop when I work at Toyota Canada. It drops to 8.5V when cranking in cold temps and causes my auto locks to play up. On occasion some doors won't lock or unlock. And I always turn off everything when starting my car, including the fan. I'm just hoping to get the summer out of it.

Yeah I know! I've since charged my battery and it's gotten warmer, but haven't tested it again.

I've been having consistent stall issues when coming to a stop, so this will be a nice fix for the head unit developing amnesia and having to re-read the CD every few miles.

As always anything given on a forum like this is give with an implied disclaimer that if you do something without proper thought or research is done at your own risk. Personally if I had a battery that is dropping that low during cold conditions especially it would get junked. Why is it worth the risk to possibly get stranded somewhere or heaven forbid be in an emergency situation and being SOL due to a preventable scenario?

I'm never anywhere I would be "stranded" so it doesn't make much difference to me. I have the original battery hooked to my off grid solar system right now, and it's not as cold anymore. I'm also not starting and shutting it off as repeatedly so it isn't killing the battery anymore.

Although your suggestion doesn't apply to Bluevitz-rs (given his personal experience), Having driven to Madawaska last year (took the 'river route' after the road splits...so I didn't go through Caribou), I can see why getting stranded would be something a prudent person in your area would think about....a beautiful, bucolic area....but getting aroung in the winter....
. I guess it is something you get used to and get better at...and for natives of Maine, I imagine getting around during the winter is second nature.
