the 20 dollar rear shock tower brace.

getting bored and was looking for a rear shock tower brace.the only one i found that i like is the c-one brace but to expensive .so i went to sears to see what i could come up with,to see if it is worth spending the dollar on one.
i bought some nuts and bolts, washers, aluminium and the bar you see.
well i have to say even though this only took 30mins,it works its harsher on bumps but more secure at speed on the highway and on and off ramps can be taken at some speeds we should not talk about.i think i will keep this on for a while and save my money for some power.that zage turbo kit is looking better everyday.

Aren't there some cheap ebay ones that would look a bit nicer?

Brilliant, except that you're bolting to the top of the shock, and the shock is still mounted in rubber at both ends. A "brace" with 1/4" or more of flex at it's mounting points isn't much of a brace, is it?

You could have those plates welded to the chassis.

Then paint the plates and bar... and it would look good.

Just a thought.

I think his end plates are aluminum, they wouldn't weld well. But, yeah... that IS a good solution. Weld or bolt a steel bracket to the CHASSIS, not the shock. Then you've got something solid to mount a brace to.

And I don't want to come off like I'm bashing anyone. I think it's great when people try to come up with cheap and effective solutions. It CAN be done. But, in this case, the cheap solution is a copy of what was a poor design to begin with.

^^^ Those bars look great!!

I like how you can still maintain the rear cargo space.

Are those solid mounting points on the back?

I just had a vision... Since I roll with out back seats... I could use a bar like that one and then add some kind of a net from the bar to the floor. So I don't have all my stuff running around the back..

Great looking bars, TKO!

Do you think that a similar design could be accomplished for the Yaris? That way the rear area's functionality would be retained.

I'd even go the extra mile and weld some extra hooks in there just for hanging bags and such...

Sure...I used the mounting points for the slide out cargo cover. The weakest point at this moment is the spacers I had to fab cause, I need to bring the pocket that the cover sits in out flush. I'm still messing around with a few different options on filling that pocket.

This is the pocket I'm talking about...Yaris has one right?

Same but with the spacer in it...

if you take that rubber bushing out then you will see that there is metal inside which extends out the bottom that keeps it in position in the chassis.so side to side it is pretty stiff, the rubber mainly absorbs up and down movement for ride qaulity. an extra brace on the body would not hurt though.

You are forgeting 2 important points.

1 The shock is still mounted in rubber at the bottom
2 A shock by definition is NOT a LOAD BEARING member of the suspension. Bracing it, even if solidly mounted does NOTHING.
