Does removing it actually help keep the engine cooler (you know, because the cover is off so there wouldn't be like a "warm blanket" effect)?

The cover seems to be for noise suppression (and hiding the wiring mess) more than anything else. My engine seemed louder after I took it off; but after a few days I got used to it and didn't even notice it anymore.

+1 on more valve noise ...
Quote:
. If you do remove it , pull out the plastic push ins of the engine cover out when the engine is cold , otherwise they'll break off in the pre-drilled hole of the valve cover . Learned this myself , had to use a sewing needle to pry it out and buy another push in at dealer . Luckily not too expensive and had them in stock . I think it's usually a special order item .

if traveling in heavy slow moving traffic it may be worth it to help it remain cooler . Then use a synthetic as well to help tame the noise with / without the cover . All in the ears of the beholder
