Wow, no one mentioned having their phone with them. It is probably the most important piece of equipment you can have with you in a car...

And it took 14 posts before anyone mentioned a GPS? I'm with ChrisJ, I don't go anywhere without mine. It's pretty much the second most important thing to have.

Plus, only two folks mentioned a camera? It can be very useful, especially after an accident. But most phones these days have both a GPS and a camera, making a phone even more important!

As for guns, as I work on a US military installation, that's out despite the fact that Texas law allows anyone who is not a convicted felon or involved in criminal activity to carry concealed in a car. But if you have a concealed handgun license, you can carry most anywhere!

My GPS is in my phone (Google Nav. ftw!!! :woot:) and I *never* leave it in the car. As a matter of fact, I leave as little as possible in my car and always assume that whatever is in the car may be stolen by the time I return to the car.

but I do leave:

a couple of maps of SF and the Bay Area (you never know)
kleenexes
purell
tire pressure gauge
pen and paper
gloves (heavy duty)
some change for the meter (not much)
some rags and paper towel
auxiliary cable for my iPod (but never the iPod)
cheap tools (multifunction screw drivers, etc.)
a bunch of reuseable large grocery bags to haul groceries in
a couple of lightweight blankets for when I haul stuff in the back of the car
alchool wipes

oh, I almost forgot... a baseball bat. (don't ask)

I think that's it. I used to keep a flashlight in there but kept forgetting to change the batteries. Probably should keep one you can just crank up.

I forgot... I made copies of my CD's and leave the copies in the glove box in case there is nothing good on the radio.

I don't leave my insurance car and registration in the car but I do have it in my wallet. In CA they put too much information on it, much more than I want to give a burglar (my cars were vandalized and broken in many times, so I guess it now dictates what I leave in the car and what I keep on me. I don't even leave the garage opener in the car. It's small and goes on my key ring with me.)

I forgot something else ... I also carry a couple of small bottles of water, or tea... something you can drink or wash your hands with if you need.
