There're many who complain about the Yaris cup-holders, and yet...

...here are the cup-holders in the 1st generation Mercedes M-Class. I guess they were OK when they were in a Mercedes Benz. I never read any complaints by critics in regards to these. And these are actually much less usable than the Yaris's. They are smaller, shallower, and only hold one shape. Oh, and they're the only cup-holders in the front of the car.

I got 3 in my car, including this one stupid one that essentially spills crap all over your electronics in your center console. I acutally think the Merc one looks pretty neat. I've seen people use the side dash pocket in the yaris as a cupholder? is that suppose to be one? i just put cards in there and whatnot

^^ Yup, classic Audi cup-holders. What a sad design. Must be great on the Autobahn.

Until only very recently, most German cars have had the crappiest cup-holders or none at all. BMW had flimsy ones that swung from the passenger dash to service the driver.

Their argument is that while driving, why would you have a drink?

^Never mind that. I'll never get used to the door lock in that same area. I know why it's there, but it's still a bit of a PITA reaching for it when there are nutjobs near your car.

And yeah, the current hide-away cupholders block the air vents. Could've been placed lower

Personally, the cup-holders don't bother me but naturally I wish they were in-between the seats which is the ideal spot. Problem is that most sub-compacts aren't wide enough to fit both the e-brake and cup-holders side by side. It's one of the reasons I'd like to see the next Yaris be about 2" wider (but no longer or taller).

I like the placement and design of the cup holders. They adjust to different size cups (our Avalon's cup holder did not...always had to hold smaller drinks in curves, which sucked), and I actually like the vent blowing on the thing. It keeps my cold drinks cold and cools off my coffee!

Wonderful.

I don't have a problem with the cup holders

at first I thought it odd that my coffee would sit so high but the cups never spill and are out of the way so it works out.

Now I almost bought a subaru and that thing had a really silly cup holder, real fragile

My buddy has a Subaru. If I remember right, he has to remove the travel mug to play
with the radio controls....or maybe the heating controls. Anyway, I agree...not in a
good spot, and he uses it all the time.

Yep, when we moved to Germany in 1995 we had a brand new US-specs VW Passat sedan. The Germans were in amazement over the cupholder, a two-cup contraption that was bolted to the transmission hump on the passenger side of the car...

The way they reacted, you'd think it was the most high-tech piece of equipment on the car!

Also, the third-eye brake light was new to the Germans back then, so it wasn't uncommon to see them jump in surprise when it lit up!

Cheers! M2

mercedes and bmw are engineered in germany...they dont have cupholders in germany...so when they export to the states they have to come up with a place for them. sometimes it's a really crappy place because there's a module or wire harness where the cupholder should be.

oh, and they're not cupholders, they're can-holders. so, that may be the reasoning behind them being so small as well. not being snotty or snoody, just sayin so you understand why bmw/merc is so small when it comes to cupholders.

i'm like them...i'd rather not have them. i dont eat or drink in my car unless i'm on long...really long road trips. and then at most i'll get a drink when i'm fillin up. if you drink too much you gotta pee, and that means another stop. same with food but you gotta poo instead, so i fast the day before and do like a liquid diet when i'm on serious road trips

There is a similar design to this in my old 1996 Tacoma pickup. I hated them because Cokes always sweated and dripped all over everything below the cups. God what a stupid design.

Behold, YW members, the worst cup-holders in the world.

Look in awe upon the cup-holders that make Nexus1155's cup-holder look well designed.

I present to you, the 2002 VW Jetta cup-holder. Quite possibly the worst design ever. How they thought that a cup-holder that covers half of the stock stereo was a good idea is a mystery.

Want to change the volume?
Well you can wiggle the left side of the volume knob.

Want to tune in a different station?
Hope you have a passenger to wiggle that other knob.

Want to go to a different radio preset?
Slide your finger along the bottom of the cup-holder pressing buttons, which you can't see, because the cup-holder blocks your line of sight.

Want to see what station or CD track you are on?
Tough shit, you can't.

Want to change out to a different CD?
1.) Take drink from cup-holder, 2.) wedge drink between legs, 3.) close cup-holder, usually fiddling with it to actually get it to close, 4.) eject CD, 5.) put in new CD, 6.) open cup-holder, again fiddling with it because the damn arms never extend all the way, 7.) put your drink back!

All afterthoughts, unfortunately. Don't understand why designers wouldn't think of those right off. A cup holder is a major convenience feature to me.
