Retrofit question
Hey guys,
I am installing the projector retrofit from Garm on my Yaris liftback, everything is going well except i'm not sure what a certain part is and google isn't telling me anything. It's called an "Angel eye driver" and they look like this: None of the DYI's i've seen use this, and since i'll be splicing the angel eyes into my city lights, I won't be using these. So what are they for and how do I wire them? Can they be used for the 7LED part of the kit? I've never seen anyone use that. |

Those look like ballasts to drive CCFL "angel eyes" (which require a high voltage, as they are fluorescent).

If OP's kit came with LED angel eyes.. it probably is a simple voltage regulator for the LEDs...

LEDs just require a current limiting resistor (which should be built into the LED array), so a regulator would not be necessary. If the angel eyes are LED, then the module would not be needed.

Did the OP purchase this kit with the seven color LED angel eyes?

However, from all the DYI's and how to's i've seen I have never seen this part used. The projectors come with 2 wires coming from them, one of them is unlabeled and has the same female connector as the wiring harness, the has the female connector labeled "CCFL". OK. So, it is not the same as Garm's kit, which is why it doesn't match the DIY's that you have seen. That wire that is labeled as CCFL confirms my initial suspicion that the module is a CCFL ballast.
So, it looks like to light up the angel eyes you simply connect the red and black input wires of the ballast to the + and ground that you want to feed the angel eyes and plug the other end of the ballast into the CCFL wire.

Man, that sucks. Here I thought I could just go by the DYI. XD
So how can I wire them to the city/parking lights like in the DYI? I really don't know much about wiring, do I connect the red wire to the positive battery connection and the black to a ground? Or do I splice the positive and negative into the city light connection? What about the other wire with the female connection? Any idea what that is? |

I asked him what that CCFL ballast was. That was on Friday.
Haven't heard back from him since. Guess i'll shoot him another PM. |

the ccfl "ballast" from post 1 connects to the ccfl cord from the projector. you tap the red/black wires from the ccfl ballast to your parking lights to run the halos with your parking lights
the other plug goes into the wiring harness which was also in the box. it controls the flap inside the projector to open for your high beams make sense? edit, no splicing of the wiring harness included! the only thing you'll have to do is use the wire taps with the kit to tap into your parking lights to turn the halos on/off

But how does the high beam control plug into the wiring harness? They both appear to be female, i've tried to connect them and they're both the same connection; one doesn't go in the other. My first picture is the one of the wiring harness, it's the same connector as the projector. The second picture is a picture of the connector i'm talking about, they're both exactly the same. Unless I didn't see a part in the box? It does look awesome! It looks even better in person, I just wish I knew more about wiring and didn't have to ask such silly questions. XD |

Hmm, I have one here that'll work if you can mail me back the other harness...

Or you could hardwire it...or use crimp connectors with male/female ends

I'll check out those crimp connectors, see if I can use those.
Thanks a bunch Barber. ![]() EDIT: Okay, one more thing. Do you have a wiring diagram? Or some way to tell which wire goes where? The wiring harness has one red wire which has to be positive, and then 2 black wires. I don't know which one is negative and which one is a ground. Edit again: I have found another problem. While test fitting one of the projectors in the passenger's side housing, the way the cutoff/beam will end up will leave the light at a 45 degree angle, like this: / Not sure if this is because they are left and right, I haven't tested the other one yet, but it looks like they're exactly the same. Tilt the cutoff so its flat
Red wire goes to + on battery, black wires are both grounds whether you ground at the battery or the frame
