Ubuntu Linux
Hello Yaris friends,
So I got a little crazy this morning, I was fed up with wonky windows vista on my Laptop so I thought geez what about going to a linux OS. So I did some searching on google and came across Ubuntu OS.. so I took the plunge and installed it. I have been messin with it for about half a day now and am very satisfied. Check it out!! http://www.ubuntu.com |

Some folks like to spend a lot of time messing with things. I just like to get things done without a lot of fooling with the process.
If I want to go somewhere, I get in my Yaris and go. It's reliable and cheap, and it gets me where I'm going with minimal fuss. If I want to do something on the computer, I fire up my iMac. I don't have to spend a lot of time fighting with it or configuring anti-virus software - it "just works." Desktop Linux is OK, but it can't match the Mac for ease of use. Windows is, of course, out of the question. Just my 2¢ worth - if you prefer to fight with Windows or Linux, be my guest. |

Your little widget got my IP address all right, but it's not much good without the subnet mask. I don't have any special hardware or software firewall in place, just what's provided as default by Snow Leopard. So, how come I'm not being hacked? It would certainly be a concern with a Windows box. No anti-virus either. |

I don't understand the complaints about Windows. What does "flaky" and "dumbed down" mean? I hear that language all the time but I never see concrete examples. My computers never crash and seem to do pretty much everything I need them to.
I truly don't know why I would need a different operating system. (but I am curious and like to try new things). If this is a thread jack, sorry, just let me know.

If you just want something that works, and is quick and easy to get up and running, I think we've reached the point where Linux Ubuntu will get you on your way of doing non-gaming business (having a clean and ready desktop+business software(OpenOffice)+no annoying pop-ups, secure/fully patched, on the internet with firewall) quicker than installing Windows and having to spend 3 hours removing crapware, installing software packages one by one and rebooting multiple times for each installation + for every Windows update/critical security patch. Installing Linux has become very easy.
I'm still a Windows user though... gotta play those games at high FPS :) |

Just to throw in my two cents - I have used Ubunutu off and on for several years and liked it - but thought it fell just a tad short for use by the general public. I do think it is now there or just about there.
One particularly good implentation is Jolicloud. I am using Jolicloud on a netbook now and am thrilled with it. Most Linux versions have not worked with my wifi adapter out of the box - Jolicloud has. Everything "just works". It is very "cloud-oriented" which might turn off some people. But I like it. I think it would make a touchscreen computer feel like an Ipad. |
