What I don't like about my new Yaris

I bought my new Yaris 2 dr LB three weeks ago. I love everything about it except for one thing: why didn't they put a lock on the hatch the same as you'd have on a normal car trunk? Is there something I'm missing here?

Right.

My wife totalled her key (ignition) using it on her trunk. This is my most unhappy Yaris memory and until now I had forgotten about it.

A "normal" lock is one that you don't need a key for. It locks when you slam the trunk lid (or in my case, the hatch) closed.

I've never had a hatch that did that.

The Honda CRX.

I had the 1987 HF and I'm pretty sure it did that. In fact, I'm pretty sure I locked my keys inside the trunk once because of that feature, or was that another car?

Yeah, the more I think about it and the more I think the CRX HF '87 had the auto lock trunk.

(A pretty advanced vehicle at the time, that CRX, if you ask me)

Interesting. I've driven HB, SUVs and minivans, and none locked the gate by simply closing it.

TOMATO: I owned 3 Honda CRX's--- an '85, '86, and an '88. They all had the auto-lock trunk; and if I remember correctly, the remote hatch release was near the remote gas tank release. I loved those cars - but I think I may end up loving my Yaris just as much - only time will tell!

Wow I too owned am 89 CRX before I got my Yaris ... His name was "Speedy Gonzales II"
I loved that car too and I would still have it if i would've had the $ to fix it up... maybe for my next car/second car I buy another CRX ... here is a pic of my CRX and my yaris side by side before I got rid of the CRX

Otterhere: everything Feel like it high up when your comming from a car like a CRX ... Its one of the things i really like that you can have a small car and yet still not feel like your riding 2 inches fro the pavement ...

Yes, it was!!! I remember that much. As to the auto-lock, I'm 99.9% certain my CRX HF (may she rest in peace ) had it since I made a point of opening the driver's door before I locked the trunk with stuff in it at Costco. I'm pretty sure it was the CRX that locked me out of my own car because I put the keys down, loaded the groceries, closed the trunk, and then went ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh sh....t!!!! Yeah, you do it once, you learn not do to that again ;)

The Yaris grows on you. Give yourself time to get used to the clutch (completely different feel from Honda) and you'll find yourself really enjoying the Yaris.

Well, the power package eliminates needing a key-maybe toyotas way of getting the upgrade out of people. I always chaulked it up to economies of scale-it's an all in one push button opener/lock-very simple and seems reliable. Yes, I can see it would be easy to bend a key in it. It's not fool proof from owners.

That explains it. I didn't realize the power package came with a remote hatch release. I didn't want power windows & locks, etc. so I didn't pay attention to that.

it doesn't. it comes with power locks and hatch unlocks with

passenger doors

'unlock twice' on the fob unlocks my 2010 rear hatch

Yeah that is one of the things I don't like also.
However, I actually bought my Yaris as is because it was/is inexpensive transportation and I heve learned to live with its "barebones" amenities. for the most part.

BTW, just in case someone doesn't realize, if you turn the hatch lock key to the lock position with the hatch open you just need to close the hatch for it to lock.
Sometimes, it makes more sense to do that.

I agree - I have a standard Yaris Hatch DR LS (no power options) - and I miss not having a remote trunk release next to the fuel door release (like on my Rav4 09 LTD V4)

OP's right. It's sorely missing IMO.

OP there is a thread on here somewhere about "what you like and what you don't like about the Yaris" and the remote hatch release complaint is posted all over that thread, so you're not alone.

As mentioned by someone, if you hit the unlock button twice on the key fob,
it should unlock the rear hatch and the passenger side door. At least that's
the way it works on my 2009 LB. I think the service manual confirms that, too.
