DIY Projects

So I got my hands on a couple of old hard drives and decided to make some wall art out of them.

What I did basically was cut some plywood to shape for a base, cut up a black pillowcase and wrapped and stapled it to the wood base. Then I just screwed the hard drives onto the base and voila:

I took the magnets out and put them on my oil filter, we'll see if that actually works when I do my next oil change.

Discuss and post your own DIY projects.

Nice. I used to be a computer tech, and took clock movements and made clocks out of old hard drives. Gave them away to friends.

I bet it would look cool with the drives spinning. Too bad you took out the magnets.

As for the magnets on your oil filter , not sure if its a good idea since they might contribute to blockage in the oil filter , the metal particles get stuck at the magnet thus reducing the filter lifespan,i think it would be better to put them in/on the oil pan.
These hard drives are 19 GB's and under. I got them from my sister who had 4 old computers lying around (like PII's and PIII's) and wanted me to erase the data on the hard drives so I just took them out and did this instead.

That's a cool idea you have though, I've seen some people turn hard drives into clocks with LED's and with the platters spinning too, looks pretty cool.

If I get a bunch of old hard drives again I'm thinking about making a mirror or wind chimes out of the platters like these (minus the circuit boards on the mirror):

Yeah, by the time I have a hard drive that's up for it's next life as a clock, that hard drive is fried. Anytime I can reuse an old hard drive I do. Matter of fact, I stopped backing stuff up on DVD and started backing up on SATA hard drives instead. I have one of those docks and I just change 'em out.

BTW, I like the disc mobile! I have a ton of those clear ones that come in DVD cake boxes and have been trying to think of something to do with them...hmmm.
