That's a computer issue if I've ever seen one.
if I recall you can unplug the battery to reset the ECU. |

Have you installed a remote starter, alarm system, fog lights, or anything else which would have required tapping wires? The automatic transmission shift supplies a signal to the ECM indicating what position it is in. It is a simple switch that in each position directs a +12V signal to a different wire and the ECM has a pin for each shift position.
If I had to guess, I would say that somehow the brake switch or tail light feed got joined to one of the shift selector output wires and is confusing the ECM. |

If the problem just started, and the alarm has been installed for that long, I would look for a damaged or pinched wire. You would need to take the center console out to get at the connectors on the shift lever.

I was going to recommend taking it to the dealer. I assume there are competent technicians there? Since you own a Toyota, is there not a dealer? This is usually the type of problem people can't fix themselves. Computer/electrical systems in cars are the most complicated aspect of them and require specialized expertise and equipment to even find out what's wrong, never mind to fix it. Many times, the whole interior has to come apart. This is definitely one of a kind for the Yaris - the most trouble free car ever. Good luck. |
