Yaris burning oil

Hello my car has about 151000 miles on it I decided to switch to synthetic oil about 2000 miles ago and now is burning oil it was neglected by previous owner now I'm worried can I switch back to conventional? Will it mess anything up? I'm not saying is burning a lot but it is a bit I'm just wondering if is normal? It didn't do it before when I had conventional oil it's a 07 hatch back

you can switch back with no issues , now are you still running 5w30 syn oil?
I switched sometime ago to 5w30 syn oil I use the toyota brand oil manly cos I get it at cost.

Yes I am but I'm going to change it this Tuesday I didn't change the filter last time because it was so tight maybe that's why is burning oil? It didn't do it before with the conventional one

maybe you just put not enuf in or they got it wrong , I would say do a proper oil change with syn 5w30 and go from there ..it takes 3.5 litters of oil with filter .

So change with the same oil and if it keeps burning it then change back to conventional on next oil change?

You need to change the filter for sure. Also when there are that many miles on an engine you should be doing an engine flush like the one from AMSOIL for example. It has minerals that revitalize all of the seals which helps keep from burning any oil or leaking.

PCV valve

Not a likely problem but a clogged PCV valve can cause more crankcase pressure which in turn could push more oil by the rings. Also if you switch to a High Mileage oil that should help.

So can I go back to regular oil I bought the Mobil one premium oil 5w30 today I also ordered a pcv valve too I don't think it I'll do any harm since I only ran the car with synthetic for 2000 miles I should of never done that with this many miles but I didn't know better

My mechanic said since I put synthetic after those many miles that is normal for it to burn it because it needs to get used to it lol idk whether if there is any truth to that but synth is more expensive and since I didn't have an issue before them regular is better price wise I'm hoping the engine is good from the inside as I stated before it was neglected by the previous owner and I don't see any leaks on the bottom or top of the engine

Also my driving is mainly city to work and college I would say about 10 miles a day or less idk whether that's important to mention I heard that when you drive short distances the engine doesn't fully warm up or some crap like that

our 2007 has almost 200,000 miles and has to be given a quart or so every few months. i've run synthetic since the first oil change and religously change oil/filters every 7,500-10,000 miles with the extended drain interval filters from mobil1(and pennzoil platinum 5w-30). i've been told it's normal for them to do this so late in life(it just started within the last 10,000 miles). the engine conditioner idea sounds good, but for now i'm just going to keep an eye on it.

I use 5w30 fully synthetic in mine. As far as I'm aware its never had anything different. Oil changes every 10k.

110k. Mine is burning a litre every 2000 miles or so. I just keep on top of it. Near as I can tell most of the VVTi engines suffer from this oil burning and it will often progress to a litre every 1000 miles. The only thing to do is a quick and dirty engine rebuild. New piston rings, clean the deposits off the valves and pistons, re-lap the valves in and change the valve stem seals.

I've seen a 7AFE on an old Avensis so bad it was burning a litre in around 400 miles.

If you Yaris is burning a Liter every 1k and you have just over 100k km on it then you need to check your PCV valve. A healthy Toyota engine does not and should not burn through oil at that mileage.

If you had well over 300k km and it had a hard life (traffic, tough climate) then burning that oil would be considered expected.

When my engine gets to that point i'll be tossing in a 2zr but I have 155k km on my engine and zero oil consumption. That is with an engine driven hard but meticulously cared for and 13k km oil change intervals on 0w30 synthetic (as per a used oil analysis).

I don't expect to be seeing any oil consumption until. Well above 250k km.

Remove the PCV valve every oil change and spray it clean with some brake or throttle body cleaner so that it rattles freely when shaken.

Thanks for all your suggestions in so glad I found this forum, I changed my oil today with Mobil 1 conventional oil premium and put a new filter in as I didn't change the filter last time and I replaced the pcv valve see if that helps

Mines done 110k miles. So that's like 165k KM?

I checked the PCV valve just out of curiosity. It was removed and cleaned for the service last year. It was still clicking. I don't think it was blocked. Cleaned it out with some brake clean anyway just to make sure.

All Toyota engines burn oil. Mine has been pretty well looked after. Oil changes with the yearly 10,000 mile service. It does do a lot of motorway miles which I not sure the 1KR engine was really designed for. My sisters Yaris with the 2SZ burns oil at around 1 litre every 2000 miles. Its only done 60,000 miles. She's only put 10,000 on it in two years.

In any case I just plan to drive mine till the engine blows up or until its burning a litre every couple hundred miles. I might do an engine swap or a quick and dirty rebuild.

1 mile = 1.6km

I have to disagree with your statement about Toyotas burning oil. I would say no more than most other modern cars, possibly less.

My previous 2004 Echo RS (ie Yaris Mk 1) was using hardly any oil at 230k km. My wife's 2006 Camry is also at around that mileage and not needing top ups between services. Likewise, for my current 2006 Yaris with 150k km. Oil consumption is normally minuscule with these cars, so long as they've been looked after.

they do burn more then they should. corolla/celica/MR2 affected big time (98-03 in US and even later years in europe). Camry and other cars with the 2.4L engine affected till 2009. Reports of prius oil burning, especially 2010.

my theory is low tension oil rings get gummed up easy and quickly. engine flush can help when done early on.
