Is anyone using the torrent file shareing technology? Can anyone comment on the risks of hackers/viruses/lawsuits?
I assume torrent based file sharing programs like utorrent and bittorrent have similar risks to other P2P file sharing programs like limewire or bearshare? just a different technology?

it's essentially the same idea, and comes with the same risks and legal conundrums as any other P2P system...

torrent or whatever you want to call it is much better though. Limewire is flooded with spam and links to websites instead of the files you want.
Learning the method for dl'ing torrents and actually using them is the trick BUT its a LOT faster too :) |

I know nothing about illegal downloading, I would never do it, It's just wrong, I mean you are stealing money from the mouth and pockets of the artist and their agencies... These people have Families...
God! But If I were into things like illegal downloads I would have to say Bitcommet is the best... and when you have that installed: www.Mininova.org www.Meganova.org

Limewire is full of spam and viruses nowadays. I'd use Azeurus and mininova to download shows I wouldn't get here (japanese anime, etc.). It's faster and plus, after a while, you can tell there are usually a few people that created the torrents who are good in getting you the files you want. I've never had a problem downloading torrents.. whereas i've found viruses and whatnot in limewire downloads.

oh, 1 more quick question: what data on my computer can other users see?
with limewire or bearshare there was a setting which limited the folders which you shared... i.e. My Music. I havent been able to find this on utorrent... my limited understanding is: users can only see files you have downloaded through the torrent client... is this true? |

OK.. with torrent files, they can only see torrent files. if you aren't seeding any torrent files, then the leechers can't get to it. They really can't see anything besides those torrent files. And if you stop seeding it and remove that torrent file, they can't leech off of ya
that's why you'll see some people's comment on a specific torrent with no one seeding: seed plz!

It is not the technology that is bad. Just how some people use it for. There's plenty of legal content out there for the taking, after all!

yes, you could say it's akin to the old argument "guns don't kill people, people kill people"...
The software's there, what you do with it is your own responsibility

I have a handfull of friends who are musicians. Some are sucessful enough to play music for a living. Some work for a living, and play music because it brings them joy. They all agree that file sharing is good for the musician. It exposes people to thier band... people who would have probably never heard them play otherwise. Sence most bands get almost no cut of CD sales, they could care less how many albums they sell. They would much rather you go see them play live, where they get a cut of the door entry, and sometimes even a cut of the alchohol sales...
Clearly record companys are hurt by file sharing. Expecially when end users have no intention of ever buying the CD (you know, download to "try before you buy"). Many times these record companies have several thousands dollars tied up in recording/promotion costs. Even with this clearly unfair situation, I have a hard time empathizing with record companies (expecially the larger ones). They are notoriously cut-throat in nature, and will screw over anyone who gets in the way of chasing that almighty dollar. They have little/no interest in providing the artist with an ave. to express themself (the whole point of music) ... the laws of karma must have created file sharing So is it right or wrong to file share? I have no idea ...
