For the 50th time it's the exhaust that klanks and rattles, And yes it sounds like it's in the engine bay.
When the transmission is in reverse it pulls against the exhaust joints, allowing a small amount of space between the joints.
EVERY car with a muliy link exhaust will do thiis a one time or another ands ONLY in reverce.
The only way to eliminate it is custom exhaust with no joints or Polyurethane engine mounts to eliminate engine flex in the mounts.

Then why only some cars? My automatic liftback doesn't do that.

Many reasons
Air temps
Engine temps
Exhaust temps
Warm up time
Garage or kept out doors
Tooling and clearanace specs
Amount of enegine flex
flexability of exhaust hangers.

Slight differences between two cars that are basically the same, one might rattle the other does not.
The colder it is the more the exhaust can rattle until the metals heat up and expand.

it seems like every weeks someone posts about the rattle in reverce
I simply explained what it is that rattles...
My hatchback will only rattle if cold. If the engine has been running 4-5 mintes I don't have any rattle.

Here is a list of options:

1. If you are that worried about it bring it to the dealer and say wtf
2. simply deal with it
3. turn up the volume on your radio so you dont hear it.

Well, at least if it would do it in DRIVE, I could put on some goggles and a helmet and ski poles and imagine that I was doing some giant slolom or super-G or something... but in REVERSE, I just can't get the right feeling going...

I suppose I'll make a return visit to the dealership one day, so they can ignore my complaint once again...

Until then, it'll just be me 'n' pink floyd...

Seriously though, thanks for the answers, at least now I know. ;)

Ooooh, I just came up with a better description of the sound > replace the above washtub with a cowbell, like the sound you hear the locals make during a european downhill skiing run. Yeah, that's it...
Did someone say COWBELL!!

MORE COWBELL!!

Actually my auto doesn't make that noise... yet...

hey hate to beat a dead thread......

but

my wife and I just purchased a lb with an auto transmission and she says shegets a random Clunk sound when she puts it in reverse...
I say random as it doesn't happen everytime...

to the one who said the exhaust bushings are causing this I'd have to disagree with you, there is no metal on metal contact to cause a clunk from the exhaust. the bushings have give for the reason that they're connected to the engine at the manifold and it would be pointless to have an exhaust dragged under your car so they hang it from the body with them...the most you should get out of a bushing is a squeal/squeak CREAK type dealy no metal noise....

I figure since it only has 250 miles on it or so and I'm not too keen on this transmission that the clunk has something to do with the fact that the shifter is "gated"...but i dunno what Toyota means when they use gated....we'll find out when we take her car in tomorrow for her alarm install and everything else....

I hope you can figure this out. 19,262 miles and so far, this is the only thing I really think is wrong with it's design.

Sorry to revive a long-dead thread, but you're right about the prevalence of the rattle and the accompanying fears of it. That's how I found this board, but as you describe it, I can tell that's what the deal is. Thanks for posting!
