Wi-Fi
Im thinking of getting an iPod Touch. Whats the deal with wifi? I hear some of it is encoded. How much is encoded, and is the trend to total wifi encode someday? (making my Touch useless!) What do you think of the Touch: good or bad? Thanks for any help!

I have an iTouch. In populated/urban areas, it's relatively easy to find a network that isn't secured, especially around town centers/shopping malls. You'll typically have to pay for any network at a Starbucks or Barnes and Noble, but places like Panera and Cosi typically have free networks. I would avoid accessing personal information (bank accounts, credit card accounts, etc) off an unsecured public network though.
The map application usually doesn't require you to be connected to a specific network to find your location, if you click the "current location" button in the lower left so that is it blue it will actively skim local WiFi networks to determine your location. I've walked around Washington, DC; Pittsburgh; and Boston with the active location turned on and had it be relatively accurate. It's a bit of a battery drain, though. |

My 11-yr-old son got an iTouch for Christmas, and I set it up on my secure wireless network so he can use it around the house and in the yard.
I have only messed around with it a little, but for what it's worth I really liked it! It is basically an iPhone minus the phone capabilities; but with the latter you can access the Internet anywhere you have a phone signal. I wouldn't worry too much about WiFi hotspots, if you want access while traveling then maybe you ought to consider an iPhone or something similar... |

Not for travel just to access the internet. Isnt it expensive to access the net on an iphone? Like $$$ a year? (maybe its not) With wifi its FREE not even dial up! Another way I can STICK IT TO THE MAN! |

I love my touch. So much better than getting an iphone.

I have an ipod touch... it is lighter than the iphone and is a breeze to work with...
Who said minus phone capabilities.. If you are at a wifi place, install a voip client and use a headphone with mic from apple... voip capabilities are up and running.. that is what I do at my place. |

I just bought an ipod Touch. At work, they are cutting off the internet access for the desk computers, but WiFi will be available.

Looks like I have to look up where wifi is. People at work say Camden NJ (where I work) was wifi at the town hall and Wiggens Park.
