Odd mileage....

I've owned my yaris for over 3 years now, and have always consistently gotten between 32-36mpg city mileage, but tonight I went to fill up and went to check my mileage (per fill up ritual, keeps me knowing why I own a yaris, lol) and I got 42.92 mpg! WTH?
Same drive to work and back, and now since it's starting to get a little bit warmer, I even used the AC the last 2 days. Car has 44K miles on it, well beyond the fable'd "break in" period, so the only thing I can think of that I've done recently is throwing in a bottle of Lucas fuel injector cleaner on a full tank of premium instead of my normal regular.

It's been about 15k miles since the last bottle went in, and I don't remember this result, but has anyone else experienced such a drastic mileage jump? 7mpg's is a hell of a lot from one tank to the next on the same exact drive.

On a full tank of gas outside air temperature could be a factor in your increased MPG.
As for running super Deluxe gold hightest premium gas and adding a bottle of fuel injector cleaner every tank you are negating some of the economy the car was intended to produce..

Did the gas station change the additives?

You will always get increased mileage from running premium fuel in your car even if it's not a performance car, better fuel more complete combustion = better fuel economy

I would try an experment and put premium in on the next fill. See if the results are duplicated. Premium doesn't help mine.

That is incorrect. There is no higher caloric content in higher octane fuel. In fact, octane is the measurement of a substance's heat resistance rather than one of its thoroughness of burning.

Higher octane can aid in the prevention of predetonation but this is moot for most folks as you have to push the Yaris quite hard to cause that much of a timing issue. The OP's average MPG shows that they are definitely more of the easy driving type.

I'm just going from personal experience as i know for a fact that we get shit fuel up her in Canada comparatively to what you guys get in the states. It also depends on what station you buy your fuels from as station to station the fuels are not the same and that can directly effect your mileage

Calculating gas usage with pencil and paper and using a Scan gauge i found no difference in MPG for my 08 sedan when on a recent trip to Florida i tried a couple of tankfuls of higher octane gas, If you feel you are getting increased MPG by using hightest then by all means feed those gas companies more of your money.
Must be quite a dilemma trying to figure out which gas stations are going to serve good gas and which ones are going to give crappy gas..

I feel there is some confusion about my experience.

I'd never put a $5 bottle of fuel additive into every tank. That basically add's $.50 to each gallon of gas I would use then, lol.

My last tank netted almost 43mpg on 87 octane. The tank before that one, I put in 93 octane with Lucas fuel injector cleaner, the first bottle I've used in 15k miles. THAT tank netted 37mpg.

I on average get 32-36mpg. My temps in San Antonio have risen, but I wouldn't think enough for a 7mpg swing in a tank.

I don't aim for conservative driving, just hard to drive hard when the drive to work is only 4 miles, lol. I have a 5sp, and if people remember pre hack, I drive the yaris with some fat white stripes on a blazing blue body :)

Around here, fuel from station to station is the same exact fuel, in most cases. Tanker drops a load off at the Shell station and then goes across the street and drops a load off at the Exxon station.

yes same here but whats in the tank in the ground is more of a concern to me as old gas stations means old tanks and the chances of bad fuel i.e. water leakage or other substances.

Most "old" gas stations around here had to shut down a few years ago because the gov't came out with new tank standards. The old stations couldn't afford the new tanks so they shut down or built a brand new station.

same with up here but we have still found gas stations with newer tank that still have contamination problems from time to time

41-42 mpg is almost standard for me. I have a 5 speed and use premium BP fuel. During the winter I hit 36 once or twice.

well, I do drive spiritedly :)

Anyways, I figured out why my mileage jumped up 7mpg over 1 tank

The damn pump shut off before I was all the way full. That's the first time that's happened to me. Today, after only 34miles on the new tank, I dropped my first bar, which never happens till around 85-90miles into the tank.

I'll average these 2 tanks together, then I'll get my true mpg over the last 2, which I'm sure will probably be in the 36mpg range again, lol.
