I'm just going from personal experience as i know for a fact that we get shit fuel up her in Canada comparatively to what you guys get in the states. It also depends on what station you buy your fuels from as station to station the fuels are not the same and that can directly effect your mileage

Calculating gas usage with pencil and paper and using a Scan gauge i found no difference in MPG for my 08 sedan when on a recent trip to Florida i tried a couple of tankfuls of higher octane gas, If you feel you are getting increased MPG by using hightest then by all means feed those gas companies more of your money.
Must be quite a dilemma trying to figure out which gas stations are going to serve good gas and which ones are going to give crappy gas..

Around here, fuel from station to station is the same exact fuel, in most cases. Tanker drops a load off at the Shell station and then goes across the street and drops a load off at the Exxon station.
