Keyless entry/alarm

Anyone go aftermarket for keyless and/or alarm? I called 2 dealerships and they quoted $650-700 just for keyless!! I've seen ads for Best Buy for about $130 for Vipir. Any thoughts?

we were deciding on whether to go factory or aftermarket, and after 6 (yes, SIX) cars owned by family members (ourselves included) having their batteries slowly drained (clifford and viper), we decided to take a chance with the factory one. the battery drainage ranged anywhere from 3 (honda civic) to 7 (acura legend) years. the VIP system only costs 300 (invoice, so ask for a little above that), and the fact that no wire splicing or battery connections is involved really caught our attention. a module is simply plugged into prefabricated connections, and thats it. we'll let everyone know in a few years whether our battery is still being drained. good luck with your quest...

Aftermarket keyless...

I had an Autopage aftermarket remote keyless installed, and it works great. Mine was the first Yaris the installer had seen, which concerned me, but they had it installed in about an hour for $110, with 2 remotes. I stopped at an area car audio/alarm/etc. shop on a whim to ask, and it worked out great. I may have been lucky to happen upon a cracker jack installer, but it didn't seem too tough for him, and does everything but honk at me (which I hate anyway!) If you've got power locks and don't need an alarm (although they may have an alarm system too, I wasn't looking for one), I'd recommend Autopage based on my experience (www.autopageusa.com).

Well I just had the Viper installed and LOVE it. I didn't think $260 was bad considering Toyota wanted $650-700! I hope I don't experience the battery probs you speak of. I'll keep you posted.

the dealerships are ridiculous for asking those kinds of prices. we admit that we were completely happy with the performance and utility of our previous viper and clifford alarms. its just not very fun having to ask for a jumpstart in the rain when your battery happens to die (everytime it happened, it always rained, WHY??!?). all of our cars had jumper cables in them, just in case. i do wish you well with your purchase. im hoping our factory one will be good for the long run too...

I'm considering the Autopage option. I'd do the Toyota brand one, but they don't allow for the option of a trunk release as of yet. If I get the autopage one I can wire the trunk release myself. :)

How does $150+tax sound for keyless entry and alarm?
