vitz is the liftback version...the belta is japan, the vios is most of the rest of the world and for some oddball reason they called the sedan a yaris in the US and canada.

The Vitz (Yaris HB) was designed at Toyota's European design studios and is sold in Japan by Netz, a division of Toyota.

The Belta (Yaris sedan) was designed in Japan, and is sold with the Vios namebadge in most Asian export markets.

Except for platform and drivetrain, the Vitz and Belta share very few components in common.

Same here in Middle east, both of them (LB / Sedan) are called Yaris.

The sedan and liftback were combined in N. America mainly for marketing reasons. It saves a lot of money to consolidate marketing/advertising particularly with the small car segment where automakers make very little margin in America.

Also, most small car nameplates have traditionally been offered in sedan and hatch versions in America. I can't recall a company that has used two nameplates for a related sedan and hatch, although I'm sure there's an example somewhere in history.

Yes, but the Vitz and Belta are not different "versions" of the same car; in fact, the two cars are barely related.

True to some extent, but since the cars share their platform, drivetrain, electronics, and many interior components, the cars are more related than not.

I would prefer the cars have different names because I don't like specifying "sedan" or "hatchback" every time I say "Yaris".

Indeed, the Vitz and Belta share a common platform, drivetrain, and electronics, but only a handful of exterior/interior components or trim.

We could similarly compare the Corolla and Matrix which also share a common platform, powertrain, and electronics, but carry different badges.
