I pretty often use the rear seats. They work for adults just fine. I'm 6'3" and probably close to 260 lbs, and I've ridden back there myself. And knew a guy who got killed in a low speed head-on on a slick road on a college campus in winter, when a cinder block he'd put in the back of his hatchback for traction flew forward and hit him in the back of the head. I'm not exaggerating a thing.
