Shims and clips should be re-used when changing the pads unless damaged. I am in the process of a re-build and install of my (powdercoated) front calipers. Process is taking some time as the rotors are getting coated at present. Tired of seeing the rust.

I always change the shims ( as they are 9/10 times already glued to the backing plate)

and I always change the clips, springs, etc as they are designed to not be re-used.....I mean that's how I learned in school, in shops and on my own cars... but then again every car IS different so it's best to read the service manual...


but why did the O.P buy the pads?

These are indeed "stock" quality pads from a Toyota dealer. I bought them because I find dealer parts prices go up, sometimes a lot, in just a couple of years. The pads won't go "bad" and they will be ready for action once the originals wear out. I don't consider it a waste of $ since they will be needed eventually, right? I've always found factory pads to be better than some of the stuff auto parts stores sell anyway.
I'll place them next to my 10 pack case of oil filters.......
Oh, and I have 4 spare lug nuts handy in the storage bin in the back of the hatch.
Sucks when you're changing a flat and lose track of lug nuts.

Good purchasing decision, auxmike. That way you have the pads on hand when you do need them, and if you sell the car you can always sell the pads--maybe even at a profit.

I'm just getting ready to do the same. Just got a price locally on pads and the dealer price is $53.75--and I made sure to mention that I bought the car there! Best on-line price I have found so far is $35.99+S/H.

I am so glad that a year or two ago Murrays had a coupon special on Formula Shell motor oil for $.50/qt. I bought 3 cases of it and am still using it. I was just in there a couple days ago and I think they wanted a couple bucks/qt give or take some pennies.

Think he answered "why" and that to me was a good answer. Get it cheap when you can.

I am using the service manual, according to it the process of re-building a caliper calls for the replacement of piston seal, cylinder boot, dust boot and the pin slide bushing. It does not mention shims etc. for replacement.

I fully understand the need to replace if so desired and would do so if they were damaged beyond re-use. Heck, I am re-using everything as inspection showed no cracks or deterioration in any rubber parts and the shims, clips etc. are all in brand new shape.

Would love to buy new everything but new brake fluid, pads and a re-grease where called for is about as new as it is going to get, besides the paint.
