Think he answered "why" and that to me was a good answer. Get it cheap when you can.

I am using the service manual, according to it the process of re-building a caliper calls for the replacement of piston seal, cylinder boot, dust boot and the pin slide bushing. It does not mention shims etc. for replacement.

I fully understand the need to replace if so desired and would do so if they were damaged beyond re-use. Heck, I am re-using everything as inspection showed no cracks or deterioration in any rubber parts and the shims, clips etc. are all in brand new shape.

Would love to buy new everything but new brake fluid, pads and a re-grease where called for is about as new as it is going to get, besides the paint.
