My D40 takes .NEF files that I can open in Corel PaintShop Pro, ACDSee, PhotoShop CS3 and CS4, etc.
I find ACDSee most useful for general edits, etc., and it is cheap compared to the rest. www.acdsee.com I finished up with their Pro version, but the PhotoManager at $50 is a good one as well, with some editing capabilities. But - if you can't open RAW with CS4, you're doing it wrong.
