Be careful, though, in California, the Good Samaritan law is no more. That means that if you try to help someone in difficulty and your helping causes them harm, they can turn around and sue you. Yup.

Google "good samaritan law " for your state to see if that applies to where you live, and also if they make exceptions for certain professions (medics, etc) and certain situations.
