You know, a good way to protect yourself against stuff like that on ebay is to bid only on items from sellers who have a good reputation (feedback in the 97% -100% range).

You can cancel the auction, saying that the item is no longer available (even after it closes). I had a guy do that to me recently with an OEM cruise stalk that I won for $1.99. I paid the second the auction ended and then the guy reversed my paypal transaction and canceled the ebay auction saying that he "couldn't find the item to ship"

I had negative feedback placed on me, that were lies.

Not be negative, but there a lot of dishonest sellers on ebay. Watch out for "no return," or "sale final."

I use those terms because buyers try to scam through the return.....

i.e: they say they shipped it back produce docs saying they did, that way paypal gives them the money back and they get to keep the item....
