how i mounted my lightweight battery
so my question is,"is this really safe?" Meaning could the engine bay get hot enough to ignite the box and paper stuff?
What I did was take the box the battery came in, added in the paper stuff the company used to make sure the battery didn't move, tape it all together with packing tape. It is very secure in the car, but i was just brought aware of how hot it can get in there. When I have money I plan on buying a real lightweight aluminum mount, but is it a good idea to leave it like this until then?

I don't know about fires but, there has to be a better way to mount it.

The burning point of paper is over 200°C. So unless it comes into direct contact with something that hot, it's not going to burst into flames.

What is the normal temperature or the engine bay? I thought it was rather high?

Well, it totally depends on ambient air temps, but generally about 30-50°F hotter than outside. So not really that hot on an average day.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Dry leaves get in the engine bay during the fall. I've never seen one ignite even when in direct contact with the engine.

I would worry more about the paper becoming so water saturated (Rain/wash etc) that it would lose its strength if you want to say it has any. I assume that your hold down clamp is securely fastened. You found a way to do it, just not sure about the sturdiness of the whole affair.

The glue in the tape will give in in no time... Which in turn will move the battery around, which in turn shake the battery tie down loose.
Something similar happened to me, although it was with an OEM-sized replacement battery. I suggest you get that fixed soon, since that battery tie down can end up in the engine bay and hit something important. .02

It looks like you could fit a piece of 2 by 4 in the void. That would be a better long term solution.

U could use some marine lumber. It's made out of recycled plastic and comes in normal wood lumber sizes. Should withstand moisture pretty well.

even a regular 2x4 will never rot in the life span of the car under the hood. I'm just saying use that until you get the proper battery tie down. You could probably find a scrap piece for free at Home Depot.

You could even paint it a satin black or something...even spray bomb it so that it is less noticeable...

yea, it is something i am definitely going to monitor. I just wish the cables connected to the terminals weren't so inflexible.
Is it easy to get them to move and adjust? What would that take so I use a battery mount that lies the battery flat, or uses the other style of connectors? I am still learning about batteries, battery boxes, and the like, I just wanted to be able to drive my car, it has been sitting for a couple of weeks. And stopping by home depot is definitely on my list. Do they just give away scrap lumber? that would be nice. I have no idea how their lumber yard works.

Check any home construction site for scrap (time to dumpster dive). You can lay it flat however you would lose the stock hood prop retaining ability unless you just want it to dangle which with driving etc it could swing over and short out something or cause other type damage bouncing around. Do a google on battery relocations and see what others are doing as far as boxes and mountings. I spent probably 2 weeks researching the possibilities before doing what I ended up with.

yea i've been looking. I actually was able to order a mount today, one of the braille mounts, for a good price.
Then I'll see what of that other battery stuff can come apart, and where i can safely and securely mount the battery.
