Have a look at the angle of attack on the shuttle. It is not imposing all that much weight on the 747, plus the 747 is likely empty except for fuel load. Drag is the big enemy on that flight, not weight.

And personally, I think overweight baggage fees are just great, thanks. I see drag everything into the cabin of an airliner except a refrigerator as "carry-on". Some of the duffels being jammed into the overheads could have contained bodies fergodsake. My wife and I spent 6 weeks in Europe with nothing more than underseat carry-ons. If you have to take the grandkids their Xmas prezzies, mail the damn things...
