ISO 9141 is the old (pre 2006 for Toyota) OBDII communication method.

ISO 9141 is very simple to interface to. It only takes a transistor for the hardware interface and some simple serial communications for the software side. Our cars use the CAN Bus standard ISO 15765, which requires a significant amount of hardware and software to interface to. This is a big part of the complexity of my YarGauge.
