Daihatsu plays Charade with Toyota Yaris in Europe

Buyers in Europe who can't stand the thought of going on without the current generation Toyota Yaris need not fret. According to AutoEvolution, the vehicle will soldier on under the Daihatsu banner. While Toyota has made it clear that the vehicle is being replaced with a next-generation interpretation, Daihatsu will continue to sell the Yaris under the Charade banner.

Don't expect to see the full Yaris family cruising the streets of Stuttgart, though. Daihatsu only plans to offer the vehicle in five-door configuration, though there will be two trim levels to pick from. A 99-horsepower 1.3-liter gasoline engine will be the only available power plant, though the company will offer either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox.

The news comes after Daihatsu announced that the company was retreating from the European auto market in 2013. Despite this fact, the automaker says that it plans on working toward the success of the brand with products like the Charade. The vehicle is set to touch down in May of this year.

I don't think I've ever seen a company buy out an old model and resell it. Awesome for the people who like the 5 door 2 generation Yaris. A manual 6 speed transmission is a lot of gears for a 1.3 liter 99 horsepower engine, but has a chance to give it better gas mileage.

Toyota has a controlling interest in Daihatsu (51%). Since the equipment has already been designed to make the 09-11 Yaris this is pretty much gravy money for them, and helps keep costs down.

Holy shit, I never thought that crappy car that I saw when I used to hang around Port Jervis would pass its name onto an NCP91.

That said, I want badges... NOW!

I ALSO WANT THE 6MT TRANSMISSION AND MATCHING DIFF/SPEED GEAR. AND THE STEERING WHEEL.

I think (at this time of year) there may be two reasons:

1. (unless things have changed in the realm of taxes on this front) The I.R.S. charges dealers a tax on the inventory they have on January 31st. So dealers try to reduce their inventory up to that date, and then increase inventory after that (which might happen more slowly with small dealers).

2. I've mentioned in previous threads that I thought the Yari at dealers in your area = heavily optioned because the overall inventory of those dealerships is low, which makes the profit in each car more precious. Not being able to find nearly any Yari might be that scenario carried nearly to an end .

I wish the US version would go to a 6 speed automatic. The extra gas mileage would great. I would probably buy another Yaris for my road trips if it had the 6-speed.

Daihatsu, fully owned by Toyota, has decided to leave the European market by the end of 2013. But they still decided to introduce the Daihatsu Charade, a Toyota Yaris, as a small car to sell for the last few years. I'm eyeing some of the accessories at the Daihatsu Germany site with interest, like the comfort blinker module, the bumper protector, and other stuff.

My question truly was earnest . Not trying to call you out, just thought you might have new information that I wasn't aware of. The last I read, Toyota controls Daihatsu with a 51 percent ownership stake.

FWIW, I think it's too bad that Daihatsu is pulling out of Europe and that Europeans aren't lucky enough to essentially get the 2nd and 3rd Gen Yari available new simultaneously past the 2013 model year (although to do so might not (or even likely doesn't) make sense to the brass at Toyota).
