I had the same problem, and my guess is it was from ground loop interference. Mine would only do the popping noises and such when it was also being powered from the 12v plug, and when I unplugged it, all the noise and interference went away. Since then, I've gotten a Harman Kardon Drive+Play, and have not had that problem, and love the unit.
