You are absolutely correct. However, it isn't going to hurt anything to change oil sooner. That 5k interval may be based on using the OEM filter as well.

Sure it hurts! It hurts your wallet, and your time...and why change the oil more then required? What? So you can feel better? Is this a psch thing or what?

Lets go with science instead of feelings.

And to those that change oil way too often and claim their engine ran strong after 10 millions miles, you need to understand that your engine would've gone that long with MUCH less frequent changes anyways...you lose, oil company stock holders win.

Only those easily scammed go with 3,000 mile changes. for the oil industry, and JiffyLube type places.

+1

holy shit, 3k miles?? some drivers rack that every month. in all honesty, if you're running a good synthetic, 5k is really babying the engine, since toyota asks for 5k intervals for dino oil. bottom line for intervals: LOOK AT THE DAMN BOTTLE! if it says good for whatever mileage, then just dont go beyond that mileage. period. and for oil filters?? wix, purolator, amsoil, mobil 1...whichevers cheapest/readily available.
