oil filter a little loose
I changed the oil f and I notcd it was not really that tight.
I only tighten by hand because the oil wrench will damage the filter if you use those cleats on the new filter.Wasnt leaking though. what do you all use for added tighten.?? I use Mobile 1. I roll up on a block of some kind on the right front wheel and thats enough to get under there.I have 70k on mine and no probs at all. What would you recommend for a synthetic super high quality tranny oil??? |

If it doesn't leak, that is tight enough!

They don't need to be very tight, just snug using ONLY your hand. Filter wrenches are only for removing the old filter as they seem to tighten themselves over the course of 3000 - 5000 miles.

what do you mean by not really that tight? was it loose and jiggling or were you simply able to take it off with your hand instead of having to take a wrench to it?

On the instructions on the box of the Toyota branded oil filter, it said to tighten by hand THEN tighten a further 3/4 of a turn...
*shrug*

I have been installing oil filters since they were bypass, using a roll of buttwipe as a filter medium, and the instructions for spin-ons has always been the same: turn on by hand until gasket contacts the block, then another 3/4-1 turn. Some people can't generate enough torque to make that extra, some can put another turn-and-a-half by hand (don't armwrestle that guy, or gal!). So the guide is ~1 turn. They usually recommend that one checks after a few miles to make sure it isn't leaking, a step that most people don't follow.
