5w-20: Are there any countries where ...
5w-20 is the recommended oil for the Yaris ? Verification would be printed on the YARIS oil cap or stated in owners manual or both . Having my doubts about using 5w-20 in the YARIS . Since the switch its engine is noisier , especially on the interstate . I think it may be the timing chain or other . The oil is PENNZOIL Platinum 5w-20 . It's considered one of the best on the market .

Toyota's 5W-20 recommendation on new vehicles and TSB is their response to "increase" the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE). If you're not happy with 5W-20 in your Yaris, you can always go back to 5W-30 or any oil viscosity that you choose.

went back to 5w-30 for both YARIS earlier today . Decided on the SHELL Full Synthetic that's $24.99 for a 6 quart case . Bought 2 .

wierd thing is that toyota like every other manufacturer continues to reasearch after a car hits the market. 5-30 was recommended, now 5-20 is recomended. im sure toyota would rather spend the small amout of money on a tsb than lots to recall everyones oil caps.

Yes, the TSB allows the addition of 5w-20, right below the note about it being better to stick with what is stated on the oil cap, owners manual and service manual.

I would hazard that not One engine designer in the automotive industry would tell you an engine will run properly on 20W or 30W. Never can clearance the engine for both weights or insure the engine would not have harmonic resonances which would eventually tear itself apart. Yamaha design the engine NOT toyota, the yamaha guys are probably incensed about that mal-thought TSB. If your engine is noisy It may be beyond recuperation, you see, the pistons will have become radiused along the travel direction of the skirt and will continue to rock in the bore at each throw causing this rukus of klattering. Mr. GID please tell me if the engine has resumed proper operation when going back to the shell "synthetic".

Specifically, my daughter's owner's manual recommends heavier oil (more viscous at temperature) for highway, towing and high speed highway operation; leading to conclude that the 5W-30 is marginal to begin with excepting "normal" operation.
