Um, the US AF academy is one of the most prestigious academic programs in the country. In the states, you have to have a recommendation from a senator or other legislator just to apply.

I think you'd be absolutely insane not to go. That education is just about as good as they get. Sure, you have to serve afterwards, but what do you think you'll be doing? Making pancakes? You'll be an officer bud. Not many mile-runs there.

I would advise against Systems Engineering as a starting point. And this advice is coming from a Systems Engineer.

I suggest that you pick a field of engineering where you think you will enjoy the work. Then, during your career, you should expand your work into areas that are not your primary strengths. As you move from one discipline to the other, you will find out that you have acquired the knowledge about the entire product line that your industry produces.

By expanding your horizon beyond your specialty, you will have grown into a Systems Engineer. Example, I started in Electronics, moved to Integration & Test, next to Software, then without knowing it... was labelled a Systems Engineer.

I may be biased..

..but with 24 years of career growth, I firmly believe that Systems Engineering is where it's at. It's high profile, high stress, but comes with high rewards.
