totally depends on what you are talking about. if you add weight but reduce your drag coefficient, you might break even. most likely you will lose mpgs; how much depends on how much added weight.

I don't think you're going to see a measurable FE improvement. Plus, the only thing that says, "I'm compensating for something" louder than a big truck or SUV is a small car with a spoiler, skirts, muffler and all that nonsense.

Well, I'm not 8 years old, but I'm close - 53. And I like cars with "all the extras", but... Everything that creates downforce (or pretends to) like skirts, spoilers, dams, etc, is creating a force beyond what the car creates without them. And the energy to create that force comes from... you guessed it - the gas! So your fuel efficincy will decrease. More gas used.
Whether you dress your car is your call, though.

I do not agree. If you have the money, spend it and support the economy if it doesn't put you in the hole. As everyone has said, the weight and drag created due to the style/type you choose will be the deciding factor on MPG. Have fun with it, build it like you want. It's your hobby, your car.

I added a front grill, an OEM spoiler, and VG fins on my sedan, and have not seen a FE decrease. In fact, the VG fins increased my mpg by like .xx mpg. LMAO. It's looks cool nonetheless.

If you're absolutely sure you have the spare $$$ on hand to do all these mods, then I say go nuts and have fun. If you just got enough money to survive on, then you'd be better off postponing it until you can save-up enough IMO.

Garm should be dropping-by here sometime to offer you a killer deal, assuming his YW radar is on right now

Well it's true, in the grand scheme of things, buying cars and car accessories is not a wise investment at all, even in 100 years I don't think a Yaris would be considered collectible (unless someone here ends up President of the US). And yes, in this current economy, a penny saved really is a penny earned.

But on the other hand, the modern world depends so much on trade, people buying and selling things and turning a profit. You can call it a vicious cycle, you can complain about it all day but in the end, money does make the world go round. I'm no economic expert, but it's pretty obvious, look what is happening now, people can't afford to spend and as a result so many industries and businesses are affected, which in turn means more layoffs.

So I guess it's a real dilemma for an individual, do you save money to support yourself or do you spend it to support your economy? It will pay to be smart about this.

But back on the original topic, will OEM lip kits have a discernible advantage on fuel economy? Mostly likely not. And if it did, and you want to be detailed about this, it will probably take decades for the money you saved on fuel to cover the extra you spent on the stuff. So it is really impossible to validate the expense this way

Although, take a look at what some FE-minded folks are doing to their cars... Some create custom bodykits designed to greatly reduce the car's drag, some put fairings over the rear wheels to reduce drag once again, etc. It might not be "cool" modifications but they do have an effect

On the other hand, as other members mentioned, if you make modification to make yourself happy, there is some value in that, if only sentimental (I should know

). Just don't do it because you want to impress others, do it as a way to express yourself, to be proud of your creation, I suppose. Though I think those who don't have the modding "bug" will never really understand it

i really dont see adding these (assuming you refer to the factory sport package parts) decreasing or increasing fuel mileage to the point that you will notice much of anything. my opinion...if you want the kit for fuel mileage, its probably not going to give you a return on your investment...if you want it for looks and you like the looks (and i do like the sport kit) then go for it. its all about what you want :)

I agree with the enjoy part. At 51, I have learned life is short. If you want to put all that stuff on, enjoy it! You are stimulating the economy...but more importantly,l you are stimulating your life!
