That is a common practice from people with high power turbo cars (Supras , Skylines)

They usually use cheap copper plugs for the tunning process as the usually will kill a bunch of plugs on their long dyno sessions. So there is no point on throwing expensive plugs in. The copper ones will perform almost the same as the higher priced IRIDIUMS... they just won't last long.

Once they are all set with their tune... they just replace the copper plugs with the Iridiums.

Another common advice is:

For forced induction applications, use either copper plugs or Iridium plugs. But nothing in between like platinum.
