I agree synthetic will often provide 1% to 2% better MPG. However, you are dead wrong about the "much better protection" over using mineral oil (dino). Too many Used Oil Analysis tests prove you wrong. The wear number differences are way too small, too insignificant. Now the one great thing about synthetic is that using them can allow you to safely extend your oil change intervals over dino. For example you could go 7,000 - 10,000 and beyond with certain synthetics. I would not go more then 5,000 with dino, however.
