i last had my echo hatchback... wires were already ran from the hatch lock to the interior...
it was kinda hard to install aftermarket actuators for the rear lock. so i went and bought the OEM lock motor (100$ at the dealer) |

good point, OEM motors are the way to go... its possible to do an actuator on a wire cable, but from what i've heard, you probably will end up having to readjust from time to time because of it loosening up.
