Katol contains a Pyrethroid which is toxic to fish (remember that the OP lives next to a creek) and has a possible link to autism:

Mosquitos put Lake Dumore in VT into Time and Newsweek magazine as having the worst problem in the Nation a few years back...... Avon Skin So Soft is the lifesaver. Don't worry you will not smell like an old woman with blue hair if you use it.

DEET is the best, but it is really dangerous stuff..... can cause nerve damage and NOT safe for kids.

I got an email (see below) just yesterday. Listerine apparently kills mosquitos. It is sure worth a try:

I was at a deck party awhile back, and the bugs were having a ball biting everyone. A man at the party sprayed the lawn and deck floor with Listerine, and the little demons disappeared.

The next year I filled a 4-ounce spray bottle and used it around my seat whenever I saw mosquitoes. And voila! That worked as well. It worked at a picnic where we sprayed the area around the food table, the children's swing area, and the standing water nearby. During the summer, I don't leave home without it.....Pass it on.

It works - in fact, it killed them instantly. I bought my bottle from Target and it cost me $1.89. It really doesn't take much, and it is a big bottle, too; so it is not as expensive to use as the can of Bug-spray you buy that doesn't last 30 minutes.

So, try this, please. It will last a couple of days. Don't spray directly on a wood door (like your front door), but spray around the frame. Spray around the window frames, and even inside the dog house.

Not sure if it works, but I plan to give it a try.

I used to eat so much garlic that I stunk. The mosquitos continued to bite. So did the fleas.

I've heard about the banana/serotonin connection too.

I had a late friend who was on a medication called "liuracil" because he had quadriplegia (his spine was severed at the neck when he was a kid). He had this "zone" around him where the bugs would never go. Mosquitoes, biting flies, moths, you name it, they couldn't stand being around him. He lived in a cabin out in the hills near a swamp and anyone who visited got massacred but he could sit in his chair and never be bothered.

Another bit of advice - keep your feet clean. Mosquitoes can be attracted to smelly old socks.

The Avon item is a great product. I use it for my son who is extremely allergic to the bites. So much his eyes will swell shut from one bite. You just have to apply it more often as it's life span is shorter than the rest.
