^ that is true.
I actually heard a discussion about this on NPR a few weeks ago. The difference is very subjective. Excuses aren't always a bad thing - it apparently depends on the context, the content, and what its goal is. Whether something is viewed as an excuse as opposed to a reason would depend on who is getting the excuse/reason.
