Automatic Transmission issues??
Hello all!
I have a question in regards to my automatic 2007 hatchback. I've noticed that when I start up the car, it seems that it needs time to warm up in order to switch gears properly. The revs will be slightly high when it gets up to 40km/hr until its been running for a couple of minutes. This happened in the cold Canadian winter, but is also continuing to happen through the summer. If I let the car idle for a couple of minutes before driving it doesn't seem to have this problem. Is this normal or is something up with my transmission? I just purchased this car in November '08 at 50,000 kms. It's now at 68,000km. Thanks! |

It's perfectly normal for the automatic. Has something to do with warming up the catalytic converter for emissions. The warmer the weather, the shorter it takes to warm it up.

Thanks to you both!
Tamago, I have not yet replaced the transmission fluid. I'm a bit torn with that. I have heard various things, from not touching it until you are at 100,000 kms to replacing every 30,000 miles??? Not sure what to do. Please forgive my ignorance! My oil, however, is changed regularly. |

Yes, perfectly normal. Allow it to warm up for a bit or just drive it gently for a minute or so until it shifts efficiently.
As far as changing transmission fluid, check your Toyota owner's manual and follow those recommendations. |

My 2007 is exactly the same. Normal Operation.
As long as the Cold Icon is on. It will not shift the same as when warm. In fact mine even has to be warmer than the 130 degrees my Sacanguage reads when the Cold Icon goes off. Last edited by BLH; 06-24-2009 at 04:17 PM. |

When I pull out on the highway and accelerate to 55 MPH while the "COOL" light is on, it takes another 10 seconds or so after the light goes out before it'll shift into high gear. While the engine's cool, it's also got the intake cam timing fully retarded, the EGR and O2 sensor feedback loop are disabled, and the spark timing's retarded. Warms everything up faster that way.

This is normal, in general I experience the higher RPM shifting until a few moments after the cool coolant light goes off. In the summer its usually the first minute of driving if vehicle is engine is cold, in winter it may be 2 or 3 minutes. as I don't normally hit 40 to 50 mph roads until about a mile from home. and its never been a problem. But completely part of the design of the computer.

Its normal. This is how the engine gets to operating temperature quicker.
