Jeep vs. Yaris to VA
I plan to got see my sister in VA, and the round trip should be about 1500 miles. I want to take my dog with me, so I thought about taking my Jeep Wrangler, since it already has dog hair on the seats and dog slobber on the windshield and passenger window. Hank, my dog, has never been in my Yaris.
So, the Old Tomster did a little math, and he was SHOCKED at the results. If I drive my Jeep, I should get about 15 MPG, which would mean that I would burn 100 gallons of gas at let's say an average price of $2.55 per gallon. (That's a little more than what gas is selling for around here, but we are usually a little below the national average.) So, I would spend $255.00 for gas. Now, if I drive the Yaris, I should get 40 MPG, which would mean that I would use 37.5 gallons of gas. That would mean spending $95.63 for gas. BIG DIFFERENCE! I can't believe that it would cost me about $160 more to drive my Jeep! I guess it will be the Yaris, and I will just have to put some old sheets over the seats and be prepared to clean some dog slobber off some windows. ![]() Tom |

My last road trip in the Wrangler netted me 13mpg
These trips (1700 miles) are done during the warm months and while the gas savings on the Yaris made the trip less expensive, I found the Jeep a much better ride (with the top down) and I didn't feel like I had been driving all day at the end of the day. I decided that despite the monetary savings that I'll probably take my Jeep on the next trip as it's just that much more enjoyable on such a long haul. |

I'd take the Wrangler just because it's a Wrangler. Then again, that's been the one vehicle that I've wanted to own since getting my license, but just can't seem to get one, though I have driven one a few times.

Hey, I didn't know we had so many Jeepers in here! Cool!
I have a white 2001 Wrangler Sport with the 4.0 L inline six and a five speed tranny. She's locked front and back and has an Old Man Emu 2" lift (which gave me about 3" of lift) with 31" BFG Mud Terrrains. I have a Warn 9.5 Ti winch on her. She has been beaten to pieces on the trails at Turkey Bay Off Highway Vehicle Area in Land Between the Lake National Recreation Area. This is the craziest thing I have ever done with her. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJVgrqsDYLE Tom |

Thanks for the invitation, but I won't be in northern VA. My sis lives in Wicomico Church, over east of Richmond, so I will be on I-64 across WV and all the way across VA to the other side of Richmond. I hope I catch the leaves at their peak color as I cross those WV mountains. Tom |

thats why I take the short 1 to 3 mile trails on the Appalachian Trail. Let me know, I'm only 2 hours from Richmond and then its a short drive to shenandoah national park and the trails.

Did you ask if the dog was actually welcome? My brother just drove a similar length trip with his two Pitbulls and on his return said the inlaws werent to happy to be hosting the two dogs for a week,he also found out some dogs can get car sick.I'm not a dog person so its easy for me to say leave it at home or in the kennel and take the Yaris..

You are right, though; dog owners should be sure that their dogs are welcome when they take them to visit other folks. Tom |
