in canada we use the metric gallon @ 4.5L vs the 3.8L gallon they use in the US...thats why our window stickers show about 25% better mileage than anything you'd read from a US print.

my yaris, iirc, showed 40/50 for city/hwy MPG's when i bought it....USmpg is what? 33/42 or something?

Exactly. Same with Europe. Most other markets show a much higher gas mileage estimate. This appears to be the same as the US spec model.

It wasn't just a Ford salesman saying it, he's simply quoting Canada's official estimate based on the different system mentioned above.

And have you not noticed that the Fiesta (US official EPA estimates) significantly beats the Yaris? It's rated 30/40 compared to the Yaris's 29/35.
That's nothing short of remarkable. You blindly state that nothing beats the Yaris and that Ford is the past. Actually, Toyota has it's work cut out for them if they are to compete with the New Ford.
