engine temp
I have a question for members running the Scan Gauge - what is you normal engine operating temperature in city/highway driving? Mine seems to fluctuate by 3-4 degrees in the city - it goes up on acceleration and goes down on idle, and normally stays around 86-88 C. Was wondering if this is normal. It stays 85-86 C on the highway.
Thanks! |

A variation of +/- 5 degrees is perfectly normal. You're talking about maintaining the temperature of about 2 gallons of water that's seeing a wildly varying set of circumstances. The engine makes more heat when you accelerate, and the cooling system doesn't act (by turning on the cooling fan) on that until it senses that there has been a change, and that the change is enough to bother acting on. (you wouldn't want you fan to cycle on and off and on and off constantly while you were idling, right?)
Wanna see something freaky, try watching the temp closely on a cool morning as you're driving "briskly" through the initial warm-up. (not abusive, just enough to get the car to warm up quickly) You'll often see the point at which the thermostat opens. The temp will rise up to a certain point, then the thermostat will open and allow a rush of cool water from the radiator in and the temp will drop significantly. Then it will warm back up again and stabilize. |

186Fis where mine usually hovers at. in colder (sub 30's) weather sometimes it'll dip down to 182 easily. in the summer months when temps are in the 80's and up it will often peak over 190. only once did it go over 200.

My 2007 LB is mostly at 181F. During the summer months it is mostly around 188F. When the day is around 30F it is in the high 170s.

I think I read in the service manual that's linked online here that nominally the thermostat opens at 184 F, and the fan turns on at 204 F. When you're moving, the air blowing in the grille is plenty to keep the radiator cooled under most circumstances. The fan mostly runs when you're idling or moving slowly in heavy traffic. Or whenever the air conditioning compressor is on.

Another me too post. Mine runs between 182 and 186 F. I have not owned the Yaris during much hot weather yet, but when it was warm around here I have seen it above 200 F in traffic :)

Wow i had no idea the fan kicked in @ 204 F or 95.5 C. i kinda thought my fan was not working. today the Yaris temp got up to 90 C or 194 F When I owned my Echo, the fan used to turn on all the time. This was before I had a ScanGuage2. Do you think the Fan Sensor temp was set lower on the Echo? & What Temperature Does your Ride run @? |

186F during normal driving.
Fan kicks on at 202F. Green "warm up" light turns off 131F.

The weather has been very hot here, but when we catch a breeze its got a coolness to it.
so most of the Air getting swallowed by the intake never reaches over 40 C or 104 F according to the Scan Guage II. |
