gas spills when filling up the tank

How did you fill up before? Were you using the gas cap to hold the filling nozzle open???

I am not sure what do you mean by "use the gas cap to hold the nozzle open"

I used to just put the nozzle in as far as it goes (which is not very far) and push the handle and "put on" the little lever to keep the gas flowing on its own.
