The slap couldn't have knocked him out. He recoiled in surprise, lost his balance, fell and hit his head on the concrete.

Thing is, someone can easily die of just that sort of thing, and the slapper could end up charged for it. A similar event happened in my home town not long ago.

When I was in high school a couple kids got into a skirmish at the gas station next to the HS. One of them fell and smacked his head just right on a rock, ended up in a coma. No matter how you slice it, even if the guy did recoil, that was one hell of a sequence of events chalking it up to a bad day...
